SONGWRITING AND GOOD OLD WRITERS BLOCK:
There’s no doubt that for most
of us, songwriting can be a pretty tricky task. It can be hard to find the
right words that express your feelings or chord progression to match. Its
probably one of the trickiest aspects of music for me personally. But lately it
has been something I’ve tried to work on, and have come across a few tips I
wish I had known earlier. So I thought I’d share some of them with you. I hope
it helps!
1. 1. There is no right or wrong way to compose!
I used to think that you had
to write the lyrics first, however I later realized that I work better when I
write the music first! It’s even ok to write them both at the same time. You
can do it anyway you want to, and in whichever order makes the most sense to
you. Don’t limit yourself to a specific outline or order.
2.
2. Be honest
I find the best songs are
written when the music is composed honestly. Music is a way of expression, it
captures emotions that we find hard to speak or talk about. When we perform or
write we need to be vulnerable and leave everything we have in that piece. So
be as honest and as open as you can, and you’ll find you’ll create something
beautiful.
3.
3.Don’t be shy or embarrassed
It can be hard sometimes to
share our originals with people, however collaboration is an awesome way to develop
and create a song. Be open to different suggestions however don’t forget that
it is your song and you ultimately have the final say in the piece. Sometimes
we can be so focused on creating something so specific that we don’t see how
different aspects can be added to make the song better.
Anyway, those are probably the
three main points I’ve picked up. It’s nothing profound but I hope it helped
you in some way! If you have any originals that you’re open to sharing I’d love
to hear them. Feel free to email me, i'd love to hear from you J
