WORKING IN A BAND 101

Working in a band can be a bitter sweet thing. Depending on each members personality sometimes you might find you clash with another member. This is all totally normal and fine, but you do need to be careful how you handle these situations. So here are a few tips I have come up with to help anyone who is joining (or creating) a band. Hope it helps!

1. Respect
It is crucial that each member of the band respects one another. Each member needs to understand the importance of acknowledging each persons ideas and opinions and be able to communicate courteously with one another. This is sometimes where bands can come unstuck so making sure there is a mutual respect amongst the band is very important.

2. Communication
I'm sure most of us have all heard the saying 'communication is key'... well when working in a band, this say is really important! Making sure everyone knows when rehearsals start, when gigs are, what the songs will be and all that jazz is very important to the functionality of the band. Not only so, but communicating about how each person feels about the band and voicing any concerns is also very important. So I encourage you to make sure your band is constantly communicating with one another.

3. Nice but honesty
I'm sorry but I have to say it... 'honesty is the best policy'. Although we may find it hard to be honest with others, when working in a band sometimes it's the only way. For example, if someone is singing or playing out of key, you're going to have to say something. Although you may feel awkward it is what's best for the band. There are heaps of ways you can be honest whilst also being nice at the same time. You could say something like 'yeah that was really good, I just feel like something may be a bit off. Maybe try....' or something along those lines. Being honest with your band ensures you will reach your full potential.

4. Keep it Balanced
Bands work best when the members are happy. Don't you agree? When the entire band is pumped, excited and just all round happy they are 100% going to play a better show then a band that is unhappy and flat, right? In order to keep energy levels up and the vibe high you as a band need to keep a good balance between work and fun. Practicing and playing gigs is awesome, but don't forget sometimes its good just to go out and do something fun as a band and bond. Getting close and knowing your band members well not only helps the whole dynamic of the band but will also flow through into your music! So although rehearsing is great, don't forget to maybe go bowling or even just play a board game together every now and again!

And that's it from me guys! I hope that helped and we'll talk again soon.
